Day one of the Rio Olympics 2016 began today with twelve gold medals up for grabs in Archery, Cycling, Fencing, Judo, Shooting, and Weightlifting.
It is near enough impossible to be tracking every sport so we have decided to make it a little easier for you with a round up of some of the best action from the first official day of play.
Great Britain’s main hopes of medals came in the form of Chris Froome in the men’s road race. Meanwhile Adam Peaty was gunning to break a world record in his 100m breaststroke heat.
Perhaps one of the highlights came in the rowing when in heat three of the men’s pairs Serbia’s Vasic and Bedik capsized. And also perhaps one of the most horrific injuries you will ever see on live TV.
Day one was one to remember and now it is time for you to enjoy our quick read round up.
Rugby Sevens
Great Britain women’s rugby seven’s team thumped hosts Brazil 29-3 in the opening game of the first ever Olympic rugby sevens competition.
Hockey
Great Britain’s men lost out to Belgium in their opening Group A match 4-1.
Despite Britain ranking above them in the world rankings, Belgium looked in control from start to finish.
Cycling
It was a shock of sort in the men’s road race with both Tour de France winner Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas missing out on medals.
Thomas crashed out on the final stage to the finish with Froome and Adam Yates dropping off earlier on.
Belgium’s Greg van Avermaet took gold after a sprint to the line against Poland’s Rafal Majka and Denmark’s Jakob Fuglsang who won silver and bronze respectively.
Swimming
A world record was broken in the 100m breaststroke after an incredible showing from Britain’s Adam Peaty. His time of 57.55 seconds broke the record in style.
Boxing
Galal Yafai won on points against Simplice Fostala of Cameroon to progress into the next round of the men’s light flyweight.
Judo 60kg heartbreak
Great Britain’s Ashley McKenzie went crashing out of the men’s Judo 60kg second round at the hands of 2015 world champions Yeldos Smetov of Kazakhstan.
It came after a victory over Turkey’s Bekir Ozlu
Rowing
Women’s double sculls
It wasn’t quite perfect for Victoria Thornley and Katherine Grainger of Great Britain in the women’s double scull heat, but still enough.
They survived any scares as they came home in second behind Lithuania to make the semi finals.
Grainger, gold medalist in London four years ago alongside partner Thornley started strongly only to see Lithuania’s strong pair pip them.
Men’s lightweight four
Peter Chambers, Mark Aldred, Jono Clegg and Chris Bartley moved into the semi finals in the men’s lightweight fours after a second place heat finish.
Men’s quadruple sculls
The Great British quad sculls team will have to go into the repechage to make the final of the men’s quadruple sculls after a fourth place finish in their heat.
Men’s double sculls
Another repechage for Great Britain after Jonny Walton and John Collins finished fourth in their heat.
Men’s single sculls
Northern Irishman Alan Campbell progressed to the quarter finals of the men’s single sculls.
Men’s coxless pairs
Alan Sinclair and Stewart Innes moved comfortably into the semi finals of the men’s coxless pairs after a convincing performance in their heat as they finished second with France taking first.
Shooting
Women’s
Teenager Virginia Thrasher impressed as she broke an Olympic record in the women’s 10 metre air rifle final. She won with a record score of 208 to take the first gold of the Brazil Olympics.
Gold – Virginia Thrasher – USA
Silver – Du Li – China
Bronze – Yi Siling – China
Men’s
History was made as Vietnam clinched their first ever gold medal at an Olympic’s with victory in the men’s 10 metre air pistol.
